98.5 the Sports Hub's report that Welker would be medically cleared by now has been proven wrong. Still, Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston describes the move as "procedural," and Welker is eligible to come off active/PUP at any time. His progress remains worth monitoring daily for fantasy purposes. He'll be a candidate for reserve/PUP to begin the year if he can't practice in camp.

Here we go again. Though Welker is on active/PUP, the Globe is sticking by its story that he could play in a playoff game if there was one today, and adds that he'll get some preseason action. The Patriots are holding him out of the start of camp "to protect Welker against himself." At this point, no one expects him to begin the year on reserve/PUP. It's looking more and more likely that Welker will be there when the Pats play the Bengals in Week 1.

Coming off the PUP list is the first training camp step toward being ready for Week 1. Welker has passed his physical just over six months after ACL surgery. Although he's reportedly looked excellent in side work at camp so far, we'd still expect the slot machine to be eased back into practices. Nevertheless, it's looking increasingly likely that we'll see Welker come opening day.

The Patriots could play it safe and sit the receiver out for the duration of the preseason. Reports on him have been very positive, though, and we expect him to be ready for Week 1.

Welker was targeted on three straight passes on the opening drive, getting lit up by Falcons corner Chris Owens on the third. He never got a chance to run after the catch, so there was no telling how close he was to peak form. Tonight's action is the strongest indication yet that he will be in the starting lineup in Week 1.

The Patriots now lack a proven outside receiver, so defenses will load up to stop Welker at least until Brandon Tate or rookie Taylor Price emerges as a threat on the perimeter. The Moss trade isn't a death knell for Welker -- he's still likely to lead the Pats in targets every week -- but is fantasy upside is curtailed moving forward.
